On advice from the local Perenjori visitors centre, we headed east from Perenjori to a location called Orchid Ridge.
Unfortunately, the heat had finished the orchids for the year but in a small strip of land, between two crop paddocks, was an excellent collection of wreath flowers and other wildflowers competing for space with the small trees.
The beauty of these flowers in such a harsh landscape is simply amazing.

From here it was a short drive to Camel Soak.
An old rock site where a rainwater collection pool was built to provide water for the men and camels working on the Rabbit-Proof Fence.
You can camp here if you are fully self-contained – only a long drop toilet but no other amenities.
The surrounding bush had some beautiful displays of everlastings amongst the trees.

The vastness of the paddocks around this area is amazing. All farmed with large equipment and as the land is too dry to run stock there aren’t fences on most of the paddocks.
South of Perenjori, we headed to Caron Dam.
A great orchid spotting site that we had been to a few years ago.
Most of the orchids were finished but we did manage to find one snail orchid nestled in a protected spot!
The dam was originally constructed to provide water for steam trains.

The benefit of talking to locals at the pub? They pointed us to a remote road near Latham where there was an abundance of wreath flowers growing on the side of the road.
A truly spectacular and unexpected display!
