Situated around 55Km east of Albany, Betty’s Beach is a small free camp with around 10 sites and you can’t book. This is where we decided to try our luck for a Christmas day camp in 2017.
Luckily, we got the last spot and it was a secluded space in the bush, not far from the beach and a short walk to the 3 long drop toilets and 6 bins that are provided.
As you enter the site, there is a map of the available spots to set up (first-in first-served!), and on the back of the sign is a little of the history of the place which was very interesting.
It used to be a Salmon fishing camp, so there are 4 buildings on site – 3 are private property and one that you could describe as a camp kitchen, but it only contains a park-style bench table and not much more.

A great spot to just relax – no mobile phone coverage and interestingly no real walk tracks into the surrounding hills, just the two sections of beach to walk along. Either side of this is very rocky so not an ideal clamber if you want to explore further.
Bettys Beach Camping
Around the corner is the stunning Two Peoples Bay with it’s stunning hills and a long beach of crystal white sand. There is another free camp there with 4 spots called East Bay – right on the beach but not really suitable for large vans – camper trailer or tents only (even to get down there).
Further to the north is Norman’s Beach. A beautiful camp-site on a secluded estuary protected from the beach by a sand bar. The beach is a lot larger than betty’s but it’s a walk-in only and a bit of a hike, then a long wooden staircase down to the water. I have been reliably informed that the fishing is very good at Norman’s but not as good at Bettys – but we did see some guys who said they caught a couple of herring.
